Designing Fantasy Miniatures with the EINSTAR VEGA
Fantasy worlds are full of creatures with rich textures, layered materials and expressive forms. Recreating this level of detail for tabletop miniatures can be a challenge, especially when working with organic shapes that are difficult to sculpt digitally from scratch. In this project, we explore how the EINSTAR VEGA can capture natural materials such as pinecones, acorns and twigs and turn them into the foundation for unique fantasy miniatures. By starting with real world elements, this workflow allows designers to develop characters that feel grounded, tactile and visually cohesive.
In the video below, Rob shows a complete build and scan workflow. Beginning with a hand crafted miniature assembled from woodland materials, the model is then scanned on a tripod mounted EINSTAR VEGA. Despite the VEGA being designed primarily for larger objects, its depth of field, tracking performance and on device mesh tools make it surprisingly capable at small scale work.
Once captured, the data is meshed locally on the scanner and exported for refinement in Nomad Sculpt, where additional detail, anatomy and forms are added before the miniature is prepared for 3D printing. Beyond enabling digital sculpting, the scan also provides a highly accurate reference model that can be reproduced, modified and manufactured as many times as needed – a significant advantage for miniature makers who want consistency across a full tabletop force.

About the EINSTAR VEGA
The EINSTAR VEGA is a portable, screen integrated 3D scanner developed for fast capture and flexible use across studios, workshops and on site environments. Its structured light system, responsive tracking and generous working distance allow for comfortable scanning of both large subjects and smaller experimental setups such as the miniature featured in this project. With point cloud generation, mesh editing and alignment tools available directly on the device, the VEGA streamlines the capture workflow by reducing the need for immediate post processing on a desktop.
For artists and designers working with organic materials or mixed media models, the VEGA offers clean geometry, robust tracking and a smooth handheld experience. It is an approachable option for those who want to explore scan based design workflows without investing in more complex multi mode systems. When combined with sculpting tools like Nomad, the scanner opens up new possibilities for merging natural textures with digital craftsmanship.
